Karen DeSalvo, MD, National Coordinator for Health IT, announced on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, that Thomas Mason, MD, would join the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) as Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Mason comes to ONC from the Cook County Health and Hospitals System in Chicago, where he serves as chief medical informatics officer of the Ambulatory and Community Health Network. Cook County is the third largest public hospital system in the country. Dr. Mason will begin his new role at ONC on Monday, February 23.
Dr. Mason is a board-certified internist, who has emphasized primary care and preventative medicine in his 14-year career, as well as additional experience in the principles of population and public health. He has also led the implementation of multiple EHR systems.
His duties at ONC will generally include the clinical oversight of ONC programs as well as clinical coordination within ONC. Moreover, he will also engage with physician organizations on a regular basis.
